York High School, York $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles York High School is a secondary school in York, North Yorkshire, England which was formed in 2007 by the merger of Oaklands School and Lowfield School. The school moved from the old Lowfields site to the Cornlands Road site in January 2009 which included the new buildings. The school is a specialist sports college. The name of the school was chosen after a vote by pupils at the schools and the local community. However, controversy was aroused amongst many students due to the limited choice they had gained in naming the school; the choice being between naming it York High School or prefixing it West York High School. Further controversy amongst the student population, with respectable staff support was aroused by many school policies, including the merger which formed the school. The school motto is Inspiring People; Achieving Excellence. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. York Railway $103.56 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The York Railway (reporting mark YRC) is a shortline railroad operating 42 miles (68 km) of track in and near York, Pennsylvania. The company was created in 1999 through a consolidation of Yorkrail, Inc. (reporting mark YKR) and the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad (MP), both owned by the Emons Railroad Group, and it immediately sold the property thus acquired to limited liability lessor subsidiaries with the same names (Yorkrail, LLC and Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad Company, LLC). Genesee Wyoming Inc. gained control of the company, and the other Emons properties, in 2002. The York Railway operates two parallel main lines, extending southwest from York to CSX Transportation interchanges. The MPs main line, an exPennsylvania Railroad line it acquired from the Penn Central Transportation Company in 1976, begins at a connection with the Norfolk Southern Railway in York and runs to CSX at Hanover. Most of the MPs original line from York to Baltimore has been abandoned, but a short piece in York is still operated. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. York Imperial $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The York Imperial, or York is a cultivar of apple (Malus domestica) from which a number of other valuable strains and cultivars have arisen, including four sport varieties: Commander York, Ramey York, Red Yorking, and Yorking. In 1820, Quaker nurseryman Jonathan Jessop (also Jessup) developed this variety of apple on his Springwood Farm near York, Pennsylvania, United States, from grafts of a tree from John Klines farm at Hellam. Some sources report Jessop observed school children digging out leafcovered apples that were in a remarkable state of preservation in the early spring and later grafted another variety onto it. Though lopsided, this new cultivar quickly became popular because of its taste and long keeping propertieswhich was especially important in the era before refrigeration. This cultivar was originally known as Jonathans Fine Winter (sometimes reported as Johnsons Fine Winter ), after Jonathan Jessop. Some sources credit John Kline of Hellam and some say it was William Johnson, nearer to York. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. York South $81.25 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles York South was an electoral district (or riding ) in Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1904 to 1979, and in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1926 to 1999. The riding is notable for the 1942 federal byelection in which newlyelected Conservative leader Arthur Meighen was defeated in his attempt to win a seat in the House of Commons by the Cooperative Commonwealth Federations candidate (assisted by the Liberals). The election was a major breakthrough for the CCF, and ended Meighens attempt to return to politics. It later became the home riding of New Democratic Party leader David Lewis. York South was created in 1903 as the south riding of York from parts of York East and York West ridings. It initially consisted of the township of York, and the towns of East Toronto, North Toronto, and Toronto Junction. As is suggested by the names of the towns in the riding, the constituency abutted on the city of Torontos northern border. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. William of York $82.85 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles William of York (late 11th century 8 June 1154), also known as William FitzHerbert, William I FitzHerbert and William of Thwayt, was an English priest and Archbishop of York. William FitzHerbert has the unusual distinction of having been Archbishop of York twice, both before and after his rival Henry Murdac. He was a relative of King Stephen of England, and the king helped secure FitzHerberts election to York after a number of candidates had failed to secure papal confirmation. FitzHerbert faced opposition from the Cistercians who, after the election of the Cistercian Pope Eugene III, managed to have the archbishop deposed in favor of the Cistercian Murdac. From 1147 until 1153, FitzHerbert worked to secure his restoration to York, which he finally achieved after the deaths of both Murdac and Eugene III. He did not retain the see long, as he died shortly after returning to York, allegedly having been poisoned. After St. Williams death miracles were reported at his tomb from the year 1177 onwards, and in the year 1226 he was declared a saint. Vale of York $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Vale of York is an area of flat land in the northeast of England. The vale is a major agricultural area and serves as the main northsouth transport corridor for northern England. The Vale of York is often supposed to stretch from the River Tees in the north to the Humber estuary in the south. More properly it is just the central part of this area which is truly the Vale of York, with the Vale of Mowbray to its north and the Humberhead Levels to its south. It is bounded by the Howardian Hills and Yorkshire Wolds to the east and the Pennines to the west. The low lying ridge of the Escrick moraine marks its southern boundary. Scandinavian York $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Scandinavian York is a term, like the terms Kingdom of Jorvik or Kingdom of York, used by historians for the kingdom of Northumbria in the late 9th century and first half of the 10th century, when it was dominated by Norse warriorkings; in particular, it is used to refer to the city controlled by these kings. York used to be a centre of Scandinavian power and rule in the British isles. The name Jorvik is the Scandinavianisation of Eoforwic, the Old English name for 10th century Northumbrias capital, now known as York. Old Norse jor is a short compound version of Old Norse jofurr which has the same etymology and meaning as Old English eofor i.e. boar/chieftain. Old English wic (from Latin vicus village, hamlet) was replaced by Old Norse vik meaning bay. Hence the Scandinavian sense of the name became bay of the chieftain(s). Rudy York $103.56 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Preston Rudolph York (August 17, 1913 February 5, 1970) was a Major League Baseball first baseman who played for the Detroit Tigers (1934, 193745), Boston Red Sox (194647), Chicago White Sox (1947) and Philadelphia Athletics (1948).
