Cheffy, if you’re on, I have a question about your externship with Le Cordon Bleu. Can you help?
I’ve seen you went to Le Cordon Bleu and did an externship on a cruise line. My son will be attending Le Cordon Bleu in Orlando and also wants to extern on a ship. He’ll be taking patisserie and baking and already has three years experience in the kitchen. He will only be 20 when the time comes for him to extern. Do you know of any cruise line that will allow him to work on the ship at his age? Disney cruises employees have to be 21. And also, did you like it? What didn’t you like? Thanks!
Norwegian cruise lines will probably take him, but make sure he specifies that he wants to work on one of the American ships in Hawaii. Trust me, he does not want to work on one of the international ships. Before he actually gets to work on the ship he’ll have to go to a four week USCG training facility in Piney Point, Maryland. Wish him luck for me!
EDIT: Yes I liked it, but ship life isn’t for everyone. You work very long hours, anywhere from 12 to 18 hours a day, and you rarely have a chance to get off the ship while it’s in port. But the good thing is: since you never have a chance to do anything but work and sleep you end up saving all your money so when vacation time comes around you don’t have to worry about finances.
